Viriato Soromenho-Marques

Viriato Soromenho-Marques (b. 1957) is a philosopher, Full Professor of Philosophy at the University of Lisbon, an effective member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, and the Portuguese Maritime Academy.

He serves as Special Advisor to the Oceano Azul Foundation and President of the General Assembly of the NGO Common Home of Humanity. He was awarded the Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique (2006) and the ‘Personality’ Award by the Portuguese Foundation for the Lung (2014). He received the ‘Leaders of the Decade in Sustainable Development’ Award from the Women Economic Forum in 2019. Since 1978, he has been involved in causes related to combating the environmental and climate crisis, peace with justice, and human rights, both in Portugal, Europe, and the global sphere. On these domains, which also include studies on American federalism and European construction, he is the author of a vast bibliography, as well as a diverse and extensive international career as a speaker.
