José Gomes André

José Gomes André is an Assistant Professor at Faculdade de Letras of the University of Lisbon, where he teaches in the areas of Political Philosophy, History of Contemporary Political Ideas, American Studies, and Theories of Justice.

He holds a PhD in Political Philosophy from the University of Lisbon, with a dissertation dedicated to the thought of James Madison and American constitutionalism. He undertook post-doctoral research on federalism within the scope of modern and contemporary political philosophy. He is the author of several publications on these themes, notably Sistema Político e Eleitoral Norte-Americano: um Roteiro (2008), Razão e Liberdade – o Pensamento Político de James Madison (2012), Teorias Políticas Contemporâneas (ed., 2015), as well as articles in specialized journals on topics such as Kantian political philosophy, the work of John Rawls, the nature of federalism, American political culture, and the challenges of contemporary democracy. He is the Coordinator of the International Master in Philosophy Lisbon-Lille, a Member of the Pedagogical Council (Philosophy Representative), and responsible for the ‘Over 23’ admission process for the Faculdade de Letras (Philosophy Area). He is a member and researcher at the Philosophy Centre of the University of Lisbon. He is a commentator for RTP on matters related to US politics.
