The objectives of this course unit are:
(a) To understand the relevant relationship between climate change and spatial planning.
(b) To analyse how spatial planning, understood from the perspective of territorial planning, management and governance, can contribute to increasing climate action in different territories (cities, rural areas).
(c) To establish relationships between the capacity for climate action in different territories (cities, rural areas, regions), sustainability and transformative change agendas.
(d) To learn about the instruments and agendas that promote the connection between spatial planning and climate change.
Despite growing recognition of land use planning as an important component of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies from a sustainable development perspective, the problematisation of this relationship and its integration into strategic and operational instruments for territorial planning, management and governance are still very deficient in the overwhelming majority of countries, even those where the issue of climate change has already achieved significant scientific, political, social and media coverage. There is therefore a deficit in awareness, understanding and political and technical intervention that needs to be overcome.
