The objective of this semester-long course is to understand the fundamentals and main aspects of climate change science. The main focus is on the scientific basis of current concerns regarding anthropogenic climate change and aims to equip students with the ability to assess the current situation and future climate scenarios. The course begins with an analysis of the climate system and addresses the study of climate modelling and the construction of climate change scenarios at various spatial scales. The following topics are covered: The climate system; Energy balance in the atmosphere; Atmospheric and ocean dynamics; History of Earth’s climate. Paleoclimatology; The carbon cycle and atmospheric carbon dioxide; Changes in the concentrations of atmospheric gases and radiative forcing; Observations of climate change: at the Earth’s surface, in the atmosphere, snow, ice and mean sea level; Climate system modelling; Global climate projections; Regional climate projections.
